Welcome to May Giveaway Day!

23 May

**COMMENTS CLOSED, WINNER ANNOUNCED LATER TODAY!**

Thanks for checkin’ out this little blog of mine!  If you’ve never been here before and have come via Sew, Mama, Sew!’s amazing event, I’m very glad to have you!  My name is Emily and I am currently focused on sharing my experience of traveling around Europe with my husband and 8-month-old son.  A huge part of this experience is crafting along the way–making things for my family and for people back home–as a way of staying grounded and making a home wherever we go.  I’ve been doing a series of giveaways on my own that are somehow based on our travels, and this fit right in!  So without further ado, I give you my two, yes TWO special items up for today’s giveaway (Note: You are WELCOME to enter BOTH but you need to leave two separate comments to do so):

Item #1: Freyja’s Rose French Press Cozy Knitting Kit
This is a knitting kit but it is also an original work of art by yours truly as the chart is a watercolor painting.  Inspired by my recent trip to Iceland and my meeting with the ladies who run Knitting Iceland, this is a simple project to practice two-colored knitting and that will keep your coffee nice and warm snuggled up in some Icelandic wool.
Kit includes:
*Hand painted color chart for Freyja’s Rose pattern and handwritten instructions which includes  little more information about the pattern itself and its inspiration
*3 lovely buttons handmade by a ceramic artist near Oxford, England
*2 balls of Lett Lopi (light Icelandic lopi wool) yarn in two colors, dark teal and brown
You will need:
*Size 8 (5mm) knitting needles
*A basic knowledge of knitting, but there’s nothing terribly complicated and I am happy to make myself available via email if you come up with questions.  I can also recommend a couple of websites that have easy-to-understand video demonstrations of just about everything you can imagine!
note: the finished cozy pictured is NOT included with the kit.
To Enter:
*Please leave a comment on this post and describe your favorite coffee-related ritual or one-time event (and if you don’t drink coffee but want to enter anyway, tell me why! I love a good story)
*Winners will be chosen at random but answering the question makes it more interesting and helps me keep straight which of the kits you’ve entered for.

Item #2: Mended Sweater Snowflake Counted Cross Stitch Sachet Kit
This pattern was inspired by an obviously well-loved sweater in an exhibition at the National Museum of Iceland.  It’s a really great project for learning if you’ve never done cross stitch, and once you’ve finished stitching, fill with lavender from the Cotswolds in England and inhale deeply!
Kit Includes:
*Handpainted color chart for counted cross stitch and handwritten instructions and the story behind the pattern
*Woven embroidery fabric and fabric for the back of sachet
*English lavender from the Cotswolds (found in Oxford) for the filling
*Wool embroidery thread in teal and lavender
*1 embroidery needle
You will need:
*An embroidery hoop, 3″ or 4″
*Basic knowledge of counted cross stitch, though once again, I will be available through email for questions and can suggest web resources–it’s about the easiest embroidery method, so this is a great project for learning!
To Enter:
*Leave a comment describing where you will put the sachet when you’ve finished it
*Winner will be chosen at random

Comments close on Wednesday, May 25th, at Midnight.  The winner will be announced in my post on Thursday, whenever I’m able to do that:)

Once again, you CAN enter to win both, but please do so with TWO SEPARATE COMMENTS, ONE FOR EACH KIT.

Thanks again for stopping by!  I hope you’ve liked what you see here on Transient Homestead and will come back for a visit again soon!

OMG, I don’t drink coffee & it’s not cos I’m breastfeeding either. I haven’t drunk coffee since high school – no real reason why, I just prefer water or hot chocolate or tea or my latest discovery is Chia tea. Boring, I know!!

I´d love to win the lavender-package, because I love lavender very very much and I would like to hang a embroidered sachet in my sleeping-room at the button of the wardrobe just to have a good smelling thin in my dreams.

I don’t drink coffee but my partner does. He is useless in the morning so pretty much every day for the last 10 and a half years I have brought him coffee in bed. Its a little sign of my love and appreciation for him. That’s why I want the cozy, for him.

I love strong coffee but why does it taste so much better sitting outside a cafe in Portugal than it does back in good old England!!!

I’m not much of a knitter, but I do love embroidery, and would put the sachet in wrapping paper and give it to my mum. She’s getting into Huck embroidery, from Sweden I think, and would be very interested to see what sort of stitching the people in Iceland do!

What fantastic giveaways! Thanks so much for the chance to be in to win them! I’m glad I found your blog through the Sew Mama Sew giveaway day – your crafty adventures sound like a lot of fun to follow! 🙂

I’m actually going to leave two comments, as both prizes look super fantastic. So first up, here’s my answer for the knitted coffee cozy one…

I don’t actually drink coffee – I’m a tea fiend instead. Especially while I’m sewing – I love to have a cup of tea next to me when I’m sitting at my sewing machine, it just seems to complete the ritual nicely. 🙂

    May 23, 2011 at 10:39 am

    And for the second one….

If I was lucky enough to win this little cross-stitch kit, I’d put the finished sachet in the drawer where I keep my selection of gloves for winter – it’s winter over here now, and I’m just imagining how nice it would be to have lovely lavender scented gloves on cold winter mornings.

    May 23, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Your watercolored chart is gorgeous! I don’t normally drink coffee, but every weekend we go to the diner near our home for breakfast and I have ‘coffee’ with my breakfast…of course, a small mug includes at least three creamers and more sugar than I can really track, but they tell me it’s still ‘coffee’ LOL! I think it’s more like flavored cream and sugar! HA!

    May 23, 2011 at 1:15 pm

The sache kit is beautiful! I would create it and then include it as a gift…My mom’s birthday is coming up!

I love knitting – sewing – needlework in general AND I LOVE MY MORNING COFFEE!! Weekends are a treat as I grind my own beans and drip the coffee – then savor each sip and the aroma – probably too much info I’m sure. Would love either of the give-aways. Thanks.

Both your giveaways are great but I would enter the sachet one. Very pretty and someday I would like to try toknit something other than a scarf but not just yet! I would put the sachet in my daughter’s drawer and see when she would notice it! I would probably have to make 3 of them as I have 3 daughters. WOuld be very fun for me. What a great giveaway. I would love to enter for Item #1: Freyja’s Rose French Press Cozy Knitting Kit. Coffee ritual…I must be boring b/c I do not think I have one. Just something I have to have every morning when I wake up. I’m a mom on the go so I take my coffee out the door. I guess the evening cup could be considered to have a ritual behind it. Whenever we have company or family dinners with extended family, the coffee always comes out along with pastires or cakes/cookies/pies that we have made to share with each other. We all sit around the table drinking our coffee while we eat yummy treats and laugh togehter. Those would be a fav.

  32. Katy

    May 23, 2011 at 2:23 pm

my coffee story is that when I worked for Starbucks they had new baristas do coffee tasting classes… you had to taste every coffee and make notes… by the end of the evening (not even daytime lol) our handwriting was so jittery no one could read it LOL

  33. Katy

    May 23, 2011 at 2:24 pm

I would hang the sachet near my sewing area and I would frame the pattern and hang it beside it (how absolutely lovely that you handpainted them!)

Oooh, I’d love to win the french press cozy kit! My favorite coffee-related ritual is that my boyfriend makes me a cup of coffee (half-caf, just a little milk, just how I like it) every single morning and puts it in a travel mug so it’s all ready for me to take to work with me. He’s been doing it, unasked, since the very first time I spent the night at his house, and even though it’s this super-simple thing, it just makes me feel so loved. 🙂

I’m new to your blog, but glad I discovered it. Thanks for the great giveaway!

what gorgeous watercolor charts, very charming!

We started using a french press in place of a normal coffee maker a couple years ago and have never looked back! I love opening the vacuum seal on a fresh new bag of beans and swirling the coffee all around in the press with the hot water..such a soothing process.

    May 23, 2011 at 4:13 pm

I do a lot of embroidery but have not tried cross stitch yet…this looks like it could be a very pretty first project and it’s so nice to hear what inspires your patterns. I think I’d put the sachet on the bed and then in between my pillowcase to fall asleep with that relaxing scent!

I think the best coffee related event was when my daughter and I visited Starbucks and enjoyed their Fraps for the week they were half price. We would watch the clock and at 3:00 headed to SB. Thanks for the lovely giveaway.

Beautiful pattens — what a lovely gift idea for a knitter! Here is my favorite coffee ritual — my husband gets up at 5:30, usually to read or run, and always brings a cup of coffee up to me an hour later when he hears that I am up and the shower stops running. We’ve been married for 28 years!

  63. Georgiann

    May 23, 2011 at 5:40 pm

And I will comment on the sachet as well, as I do love to stitch! I would probably keep the sachet in a drawer in my workroom, so that I would often be reminded of the kindness of Giveaway Day!

  67. Sarah C

    May 23, 2011 at 6:27 pm

I actually don’t drink coffee. I don’t like the idea if being dependent on something (like cafeine) and because my family seems to genetically be kind if intense and addictive I don’t risk it. Anyway. When I was a defiant teenager my father ‘forced’ me/insisted I drink a whole cup of coffee at a fancy cafe with him to have a life-chat and break me of some conditionings. Kind of funny since most of my peers were downing the stuff like there was no tomorrow!
Love your giveaways and am jealous of your trip!
    Best wishes!

  69. Suzanne

    May 23, 2011 at 6:32 pm

I would love to win the French press cozy. My husband and I are coffee fanatics and our daily ritual is that he makes me a latte on our fancy Italian espresso machine while I make something for breakfast. We’ve gotten pretty good at timing our jobs so the coffee is ready right as the toast is being buttered (or eggs scrambled).

  70. Sara

    May 23, 2011 at 7:19 pm

Since I’m not much of a coffee drinker my favorite coffee moment is seeing the smile on my man’s face when he wakes up in the morning and realizes that I set the coffee pot the night before…it always makes his day.

Oh my that knitting kit is amazing, your painted instructions are beautiful!
I quit work when I had my son and by far and away the thing I miss the most about working is picking up my morning coffee on the way and sitting on the steps of work drinking it before I started the day!

  78. vicki

Item #1 – favourite coffee related ritual….on laundry days (we live way out in the country and have water delivery so I bring our laundry to town to the laundromat to do it every week or two) I’ll get the laundry loaded up and then head over to the coffee shop and get a rich latte, I’ll sit there with no kids, no obligations for a whole 30 minutes while I wait for my wash to finish. I’ll have my latte and my latest favourite book and just enjoy being alone. Love it!

I’d just LOVE to win the french press cozy so I could make it for a friend. She used to hint to me that she wanted me to buy her a french press for Christmas, and I never did get her one, so she finally bought one for herself! So if I were to make her a cozy, it would be perfect!

I don’t drink Coffee! After watching my parent get headaches if they missed their morning coffee as a teenager I decided that I wouldn’t drink the stuff. Instead I now drink 10 cups of tea a day and get a headache if I don’t have my morning cup. Go figure.

OK..that’s not really the kind of comment you asked for…but… mmmmm coffee… is all I’ve got on my mind right now….lol

Mine might be more of a chocolate related ritual but I can’t eat chocolate without a good hot cup of coffee to go with it. Peas in a pod. Fortunately I can drink coffee without the chocolate or my spare tyre would be enormous by now!
How lucky you are to be travelling and finding lovely crafts in different countries.

I like the colour combination for the sachet. It seems a shame to put it out of sight in the ‘smalls’ drawer. Perhaps where is can be fully appreciated on the shelf in my living room.

It sounds like a wonderful trip you are making – and great to discover you via the Sew Mama Sew initiative. If you are back in England at all I do hope you will head our way! I have become a follower so that I can keep up with you.

I’d love to enter for the knitting kit first. Coffee is a bit of a sore point with me at the moment – I have always loved it, especially a nice cappuccino, but I am beginning to suspect that it doesn’t do me too much good, and I might have to give it up, oh dear!

And it would go in my cardi drawer, of course, to keep the moths away …

Okay, I am not much of a coffee drinker. I prefer black tea and drink that every day. Occasionally I will have a latte … but that is it. A rather memorable incident with coffee … years ago I was at an airport with a friend to pick someone up. The flight was delayed … and it was late. So in order to stay awake we drank coffee. Instead of regular coffee I had espressos. Me not being used to coffee at all … I had about 5 or more of them … VERY stupid choice! As I got a very bad stomach ache and was feeling miserable ALL night! Never ever have had so many espressos after that!!!! 🙂

Thanks for the fun giveaway! I LOVE iceland – since I was a kid. But have so far not been there. Really wanna go and really love those sweaters that they knit there! What an amazing giveaway! Will start following you ….
Stop by my blog and enter mine, too – you could win some custom-made buttons! 🙂

Love the way you incorporate your travels in your crafts! Amazing!

Where would I put the sachet? Well, either in my drawer of clothes … or I would hang it to my pin board close to my work table. Just so I can look at it all the time … 🙂

I love the look of that French Press cozy…I don’t actually drink coffee, but both of my parents do and it would make them a lovely present. Once when I was considerably younger I was making coffee for my Dad for the first time when my Mum was away. He clearly wasn’t watching me closely enough, because I actually made his coffee with cold water straight from the tap – needless to say he wasn’t that impressed!

Freyja’s Rose French Press Cozy please! My favorite coffee-related ritual is actually about iced green tea. I go to my favorite local coffee shop every single day through the drive up and have for about 3 or so years. I just love when they have my tea ready because they recognize my car. I was thinking it was just the car, but one day I actually went inside. They were so surprised to see me walking they exclaimed “She HAS legs!”

For the lavender sachet – Your beautiful giveaway combines two of my mother’s favorite things: cross-stiching (like crazy… seriously, my parent’s house doesn’t have a wall without one of my mother’s pieces that she has made from the mid-1970s to present) and the smell of lavender. When I was about six, she taught me how to cross-stitch – a craft that I dabble in from time to time. This pattern, plus English lavender, would be the perfect gift for me to make for her and gift upon her arrival to London in July!

I have to drink decaf cause regular coffee totally cracks me out, like majorly, I have even had random panic attacks from coffee. I also get irregular heartbeats when I am super stressed out and coffee makes it worse.
But I live in Portland Oregon and crave it like mad, so thank goodness for decaf:)

You could say the only reason I get out of bed is just to have coffee. But not black or even regular, no I doctor mine up with quite a bit of Skinny Caramel Machiato and 1% milk. Ahhhh, that’s like dessert and breakfast in one. I really enjoy my glass coffee press but my husband prefers the coffee maker. Since I hate to waste coffee, I usually just make a pot his way and enjoy. Special occasions for me warrant my press, I’m thinking tomorrow morning will be special enough!!!

Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful, unique craft!! I’m so glad I found your blog!!

This is my entry for the knitting pattern and wool. I live in the far north. I am so jealous of your travel in Iceland. The pattern really speaks to me of cold winters. I would love to win this. I am not a coffee drinker though, only tea. Rituals with tea abound. My DH has to have the temperature of the water just right – and never let it boil. Then the tea is steeped for 3 or 4 minutes depending on whether it is a cup or a pot and the type of tea. Loose tea can be reused 2 or 3 times and just gets better. Thanks for your lovely giveaways.

I’ve been an admireror of the sweater kit for a while so it would be grand to win.

I once applied to work at Starbucks for the summer and my interviewer asked me a similar question. I do not drink coffee but my mother does ritualistically in the morning and when she needs a break from her day. She had a special mug that was just for her coffee. Thinking of my Mom, I told my interviewer that I love the smell and the bit of happiness it can bring to people’s days and how I would love to be a part of that. He looked at me like I was crazy!

Love, love, love, love it. Would frame both patterns for sure. Thanks for once again being inspired by visiting us at Knitting Iceland. We were also inspired by meeting you!

Item #-Everytime my sweetheart brings me my morning-before-work coffee, I am transformed in my memory, for five minutes or so, to my being seated in a big chair, with my grandmother and her lady friends-they would have REALLY strong, spanish coffee in demitasse cups-she always poured some of hers into to baby-sized porcelain cup, and I would swing my legs gently, and mimic proper etiquette from her. I am named after her.

Item #2- I have a hugh, old portrait of my grandmother’s last baby she had, at about a year old. Her name was Dorothy, and she would have been my Aunt. She passed away from Meningitis, and the family always shared their memories of her. That portrait has her seated on a bear skin rug. This portrait was always hung in our small, extended family home, and it eventually passed on to me. I have had the portrait re-framed in professional, archival frame and glass, and hangs prominently in my home. I immediately knew that Iwould cascade it gently down the front of the frame. The lavender is precious, as was she. I also know that I may not ever make it to the UK, but love British television/BBC, culture and literature. Thank you for creating this site-it is warm, easy to navigate, and wonderful to share with others.

Emily — I love your cool giveaways — what a creative idea!

If I got to make Item #2 — I would hang it next to my white clawfoot tub so I could look at it when I’m in for a hot soak.

Such a cool way for you to track your adventures through Europe!

Freyja’s Rose French Press Cozy Knitting Kit — I’m relatively new to knitting (still learning!) Love the idea of a small project, the yarn looks amazing! Love the look of the paper the project is printed on.

Mended Sweater Snowflake Counted Cross Stitch Sachet Kit — i would make this for my husband. He works rotating shifts and spends 2 nights at work…so for either his bag or his locker…unless he wanted to leave it at home with his….t-shirts *grin*

He used Lavender deodorant when we met….just one of the things I love about him!

My coffee ritual is making my own mix of Cafe Vienna, heating the water nice and hot, oh the fragrance when you put the hot water to the mix!!! My favorite flavored coffee, sitting down and having a good chat with my honey. It makes for a great start to a day!!!

    Oh, I like the snowflake…being a flake myself……grin….

Freyja’s Rose: I don’t drink coffee (!!), but I think a french press would be perfect for my tea addiction.

I love making myself a nice cup of English Breakfast tea in my precious Royal Doulton mug. I swear that tea tastes a million times better if it’s in proper china. Mmmmm.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

Snowflake Sachet: I’d probably keep it in my knitting basket in the living room, so that every time I pulled out my current project, I’d get to see my pretty pretty sachet as well.

    Thanks 🙂
